Dragon Dictate Software test
A lot of Tags

Dragon Dictate software

This is a test of the Dragon Dictate software for Mac. I am writing this post in Microsoft Word, then pasting it into blogger. Over the holidays I watched a lot of Hallmark Channel movies. Late night Dragon dictate seems to own the advertising on the Hallmark Channel. I ordered the software because it was inexpensive compared to their regular price and because it looked cool.

My mother bought me the PC version several months ago after seeing an ad on TV. She said I would be able to get more done and post more frequently to my blog. I also think she bought it so she could write on the computer without actually having to type. She doesn't even know how to turn the computer on yet, but with Dragon Dictate she might be able to send emails or letters to her sister in Texas.

So today I am testing it. I don't mind typing, but I'm a much better editor that I am a typist. If I can speak to you and spew all the thoughts in my head then go back and edit the content, it's so much easier for me.

The software has a learning curve. I need to learn how to speak so it can recognize what I say. And it needs to learn what I'm saying and how I speak. When you speak there is a box in the middle of your screen that says, “Recognize Text,” with the text it just recognized. This is slightly annoying but I'd rather speak then type. I can speak a lot faster than I can type.

The software comes with a headset microphone. I must look like I'm at some kind of call center. Small price to pay for not having to type. There's one earpiece, and the microphone is on the same side as the earpiece. The other side has a bar that goes above your ear. I have a ponytail today and every time I take the headphones off the bar gets caught in my hair. Again small price to pay for not having to type.

Tags a lot

Today's post features tags I made before the holidays. All my holiday tags were put on gifts. But I was in a tag making mood before the gift tags were made and I have several to share.

This tag was inspired by Tim Holtz and Julie Fei-Fan Balzer. The background is very Tim, and the leaves are very Julie.

This tag is also inspired by Julie and Tim. This time the background features circles that remind me of work. The music and lamppost stamp are both from Tim Holtz. Many of these tags also include postage stamps. The postage on this tag is a Christmas stamp. The wreath on the lamppost was created by me in Illustrator and cut out on the Silhouette SD. The red dots on the wreath are Smoosh ink. (Dragon doesn't like brand names sometimes - I had to type Smoosh).

This tag was an experiment with glue and glitter. I am not a big glitter fan. I won a bunch of glitter from Amy at Mod Podge Rocks, and in the package was a note saying that I would hoard this glitter and Mod Podge but I would use it within 13 years. The Mod Podge has been used several times, but the glitter was harder for me to use at all. A friend of mine calls glitter the herpes of the craft world, "because you can never get rid of it," and I believe it. So this experiment was important as I was testing adhesives to see if they would hold the glitter without it flaking off. The chunky glitter is never going to move. The finer glitter comes off if rubbed, but does not come off if you don't work at it. Thank you Glossy Accents.

This tag features embellishments from K and Company. When I purchased the package I did not realize that each embellishment had several layers. They were not going to work for the projects they were purchased for, so I use them on tags. The background uses Distress inks, and a template of wood grain by fill this in later. This stamp of the postmark has been in my collection for years, the postage stamps have also been in my collection for years. It's nice to finally get the old stuff out and use it.

This tag also features a K and Company embellishment, and an old postage stamp, as well as a page from a book. The background was colored with metallic Distress ink. The leaves are from a very old stamp. I used Versamark ink and embossed with green Zing embossing powder. Upon close inspection the words on the page are also embossed. I will have to experiment a bit more to see how what else I can do with that.

This tag was super easy to make. It features a laugh banner stamp from the dollar bin at Michael's. The cherries are from that K and Company embellishments collection, and the stripes are washi tape. The edges have a bit of Distress ink to give it some depth.

The next tag features a green background thanks to a Distress ink dauber. A stamp from Stampin’ Up provides the stems for the flowers and the grass around them. The flowers are fallen fakes picked up from the floor at Michael's. The “private collection” stamp has been in my collection for a very long time, I'd forgotten I even had it. The green tape at the bottom is florist tape. The butterfly is from K and Company.

The background of this tag was colored with blue Mr. Huey ink mister. I put some repositionable tape on the tag first so I would have a space to put the word "voyage". The voyage stamp was stored with the “private collection” stamp so I forgot I had that too. The postage stamps are from all over the world but the colors worked so well together for a monochromatic or duo-chromatic tag. The butterfly is from the K and Company embellishments collection mentioned before.

The last tag features a butterfly from the K and Company collection. The background is from a calendar, I cut just a small portion of the wall behind a floral arrangement for this tag. Sort of like having free paper. "Friends forever" is a stamp from Stampin’ Up. I used a punch from Stampin’ Up for the scalloped border.

Hopefully I will be able to post more frequently now that the holidays are over and the crazy has died down.

Enjoy the Ride

I love making tags. They are like therapy.

There is no pressure to make them archival like scrapbook pages. They don't have to tell an accurate story to my (hopefully someday) grandchildren and great -grandchildren. Tags don't have to be send-able or sell-able like cards.

I made the background on this tag when I was playing around making Tim Holtz style tags. It's blueness sat on my desk for days waiting for a purpose. I decided to stamp a few trikes on it using Distress ink. I stamped the first one and them just stamped off the ink for the other images.

I had made the Enjoy the Ride flag a while ago for a different project and just pulled one out of the precut/prestamped drawer of my scrap storage.

I thought it looked a little odd just sitting there so I decided to stitch it on the tag. I used embroidery floss and in retrospect I should not have used so many strands. The red was lonely so I stitched the 3 x's at the bottom of the tag. To complete the triangle I added the red ribbon.

I placed the tag on a kraft card and thought it was too plain so I added white polka dots. It's a simple card but I like it.

Tim Holtz Style Tags

I recently watched the video Tim Holtz did for Simon Says Stamps Stamptember Celebration. I learned a lot and gave the new techniques a test run. I didn't have all the stamps Tim used but found similar images at Micheal's from Hampton Arts. They are smaller but the price was right and the results work for me.

Tim's set featured an eye - I had one in my collection. Tim's set included an eye chart, and a hand. The new set had those images. I used Distress Inks and Momento dye ink, even though it's water soluble. I just made sure I stamped those bits. last.

In the video Tim introduced new Metallic Distress Stains. The shimmer was so cool putting these stains on my wish list — the short list.  This tag was my attempt to use metallics. Of courses without these news stains I had to improvise. I used Adirondacks Metal Mixatives. It's not as shimmery but it's still kind of cool. The skeleton is from a new Halloween set. The ruler is from the Hampton Arts set. The film strip is new washi tape.

The skeleton on this card is from the new Halloween set. The film strip washi tape is on this one as well.  The upside down B is attached with Tim Holtz's Tiny Attacher

Christmas Tag Finished and Applied

The final tag with name and extra embellishing. Isn't this a beautiful package? Just what every 8 year old boy wants to see. Well actually it is. His name on a gift is really important.

Winter Blossoms

Have you ever bought craft supplies because you had a "plan" for them, then got them home and tried to work the plan only to find out the plan wouldn't work for you? Do you have craft supplies you're storing because someday you will use them on something, anything? Be honest now

Me too. I have oodles of stuff like that. Well today I married up some seemingly unrelated items and was quite pleased with the results.

When the local JoAnn Fabrics closed their doors I nearly bought out the place. That was in the days of cash flow, when I worked 10 minutes from home and JoAnn was between here and there. I had a "plan" for each purchase, of course that was 4 years ago and so many of those projects have been abandoned or forgotten. I bought a lot of brads, snaps and eyelets back then. If you follow my work you know I don't use a lot of these items so I still have a little drawer full of brads, etc.

When shopping in stores with floral aisles departments I will pick up fallen flowers and bring them to the cashier to be "dealt" with. I don't want them to be destroyed my a cart if they can be returned to a stem, generally cashiers will take them and lean toward the waste basket. I always offer to take these fallen treasures home. It's become habit and now I have a box full of flowers.

Last year I bought a string of felt snowflake garland to cut up and use on cards. These cards were never made. And I have a sandwich box full of flakes.

These are not the days of cash flow and this year's gifts aren't much so I wanted to make the tags special and more elaborate than usual. The items listed above don't sound like they would combine well but they actually went together quite well to form the embellishment on some of this year's tags.

Which do you prefer, music or Italian Poetry?

I've been following Tim Holtz's 12 Tags of Christmas, it's now one of my holiday traditions, and I loved the colors and music background on Tag Number 9.

Well I don't have that stamp but I do have some holiday song books and a printer/copier that I can reduce stuff on so I reduced some sheet music for a background. and tried to use Distress ink on it to change the color. Well the colors on the music started to smear so I abandoned the idea and crumpled up the paper then used the ink pad directly on the paper picking up the wrinkles only.

I tried using the same colors with the Italian Poetry stamp from Hero Arts and some distressing. I didn't go as far as Tim did with the distressing (if you could see my desk you'd know why) and it's ok but not a wow.

I used a wide Christmas plaid ribbon on the right and added the brad, blossom, flake embellishment. I am thinking about centering a die cut between the embellishment and the bottom of the tag so I can add the gift recipient's name to the tag. I've been searching for my small alpha stickers off and on all day, this is the drawback of leaving the studioffice with supplies, sometimes they don't return to the right spot.

My son prefers the music tag to the Italian Poetry tag. Which do you prefer?

Spellbinders Nestabilities Label 4 die.
Stampin' Up! Cardinal Christmas stamp set
My son also prefers a yellow center to a reddish one so here is one of his gifts. The letters here are from a Chartpak Velvet Touch Lettering set of rub-on I used in college - before computers were so ubiquitous. They are 25 years old and still work well if not often. I have so many of them and have decided to use them this year.  I have a new philosophy when it comes to a lot of stuff in my massive stash: use it or lose it. If it's not serving me I'm serving it by storing it and that needs to end. Too much clutter makes the mojo go blind.

A while back I received an envelope of papers from Jamaica Edgell, of the Effer Dares, as a share for a challenge the Dares were running. It was quite inspiring. I got a page from a daily planner, a "Hello my name is…" sticker, and several colorful scrapbook papers. I created something as soon as I got it. It was that inspiring.

Well I am considering doing the same thing, offering inspiration packs to my followers and friends. My stash includes a lot of postage stamps, antique books, maps, the aforementioned flowers, and scrapbook papers. If you would be interested in receiving an inspiration pack become a follower and let me know. I will start putting them together.

Tags A Lot Kid

This week I've been playing with tags around the busy schedule I talked about in my last post.

I play with tags as a way to try new techniques and not all of them turn out well but I do learn from them so that's good. One of the reasons I made tags THIS week is because I watched Izzy Hyman from Paperclipping Live making tags and I was inspired. I started making Tim Holtz style tags as soon as I got the non-stick Craft Sheet a few weeks ago. I am really happy with the results, and these are the good ones. Maybe there were too many colors? Maybe they got too wet when I made them?

I like this mummy tag though.  I sponged yellow ink on the tag through sequin waste. I then dabbed some Vintage Photo ink on to the craft sheet and smeared the tag into it. I was happily surprised that the ink was darker on the sponged area. This tag sat on my table for weeks (go back to WOYWW posts if you want to play a "Where's Waldo" style game of find the tag.) When I brought home this adorable mummy  from the $1 bin at Micheal's I knew it was right for the tag. The letters are cut from a book I keep on hand for cutting out words and letters.

This animal tag was made because I wanted to play with a couple of Imaginisce stamps I've had for a while but had no card or scrapbook page in mind. I may be cutting these out and adding them to a zoo page or I may just add the tag, a bit of patterned paper and a sentiment and call it good.

I have a lot of polymer stamps that may have seen ink once or twice. It's a bad habit. I see something "so cute" that is $2 or less and I buy it. Then I go home and often forget about them. Lately I have been going through stuff to see what can be purged. I like these images. I will use them for those zoo pages. I will keep them for a while at least.
This Halloween inspired tag was the first one I made after I got the craft sheet. I stamped the blotch with Stampin' Up! Cranberry Crisp first (this color is long retired). Then I stamped the male figure with Versamark and embossed it so it would stay light. I then brayered the same red on top of the whole tag. Then stamped the cobwebs and bat and sponged on the black Distress Ink on the edges.
Just a note. I do not watch Dexter . I don't have Showtime, or cable for that matter, but if I did have it I wouldn't watch this show. I have no interest in watching people being killed or in show where the protagonist is a killer.

Today I was cleaning up, a bit,  and decided to make a quick card. This is what I came up with. I like the sentiment, "I love you so". My son, taking after his grandfather looked at it and said, "I love your sewing." Argh!

All supplies for this card are from Stampin' Up! and most are sadly retired. The stamps are from ABC Alphabet lower and ABC Images.

tags a lot and an experiment

I love making tags. They are generally quick and easy. Of course I tend to make them in batches. So I have at least 2 of every one here and the "for you" tag - I've got 12 of them. I have 12 in pink too.

So the question is... Which ones to YOU like best? If you had these tags would you use them on gifts? Cards? Scrapbook pages? home decor?

I don't have a little girl in the house but I would totally use the for you tags on favors for a birthday party.

The Experiment
I have a collection of acrylic die cuts. Love them but don't always know what to do with them. I don't cover them with paper — takes away from the coolness of acrylic. But I don't really use them so they just sit.

If you are a regular reader you know about the Urge to Purge mode now in effect at my house. I decided if I'm not going to use it, it's time to lose it. So anything in the I'm not using it pile ripe for experimentation. When I experiment I don't expect things to go "perfectly", I expect I will even lose materials and that's ok. It's time to learn, to see what's possible. There is not enough of that in my life.

Experimenting takes a lot of pressure off. It's not expected to be "right" or "perfect". Heck it may even melt under the pressure. I am happy to say that it didn't melt (under the heat gun) it did quite well actually. I used ultra thick embossing powder and Versamark. I thought the piece needed some texture so I stamped a swirl on it. What do you think?
