#Mancraft Monday — Juan Ambida

I have been a daughter, a sister, a school girl, a mom, and a menopausal woman. I have never been, nor will I ever be, a man. I love seeing different perspectives and that's why I started the Mancraft Mondays series. I wanted to find male paper crafters and see if they brought a different feeling to the craft I love.

Stamp sets created by men like Tim Holtz and Brett Weldele (both with Stampers Anonymous) and the sets designed by Chuck Carson for Brutus|Monroe definitely have a unique vibe. However, I've found that the creations of all paper crafters depend on the stamps they are using. Certain illustrations styles lend themselves to a particular interpretation.

This month's man crafter is Juan Ambida aka Juana from Western Sydney, Australia. I'll let him take it from here.

Hi, my name is Juan Ambida aka Juana I was born in the Philipines and came to Australia when I was nine. I have always had a passion for art and design and have always undertaken some kind art project from school events and have carried through work and personal life mainly as a cardmaker.

Stampin' Up! — Special Reason Bundle

I have a background in graphic design and have worked for an advertising agency. I currently work as a freelance graphic designer and also create and sell handmade cards.
I am hobby Stampin' Up! demonstrator. I initially joined for the starter kit in early 2016 and progressed from there, as I just couldn't get enough of all the great products.

Joining Stampin' Up! and the Crazy Crafters team of SU demos, led by Kylie Bertucci who is one of the top SU demos in Australia, has introduced me to the world of paper crafting. Since joining I have started my blog page juanacreate and participated in regular blog hops as well as card challenges. It's truly helped to developed my skills in this fun craft.

Stampin' Up! — Everyday Hero
I had the privilege of being a display stamper with SU conventions in November 2016 and April 2017.  I have also taken part in an exclusive International Tutorial Bundle Design Team of SU demos from around the world since February and just recently joined a Stamp Up! Review Crew.

It has been so much fun to create and share my creations and I love it immensely. My style is quite varied, quite eclectic and I can work in any medium. I love to create anything that is intricate to clean and simple.

My Favorite Things — Ninja-Mazing

I branched out and began using other brands including Lawn Fawn, Mama Elephant, My Favorite Things, Hero Arts, and Simon Says Stamp. There is so much inspiration out there from these brands and their designers that I will continue to create for the pure joy and love of creating.
When you do something you love, you do it well. I love creating and maintaining a high level of quality workmanship.

#ManCraftMonday - Timothy Thomas

I have become kind of an Instagram junkie. I look at all the pretty pictures of other people creations and enter the names of my IG friends into the comments of giveaways.  Last year I noticed lumberjacks from different stamp companies showing up in my feed so I went looking for more. That's when I discovered this card and became a Timothy Thomas follower and fan.

Stanpin' Up! Wood you be mine? stamp set
Welcome to #ManCraftMonday for April. I'll let the man of the month take it from here.

My name is Timothy Thomas. I was born and raised in Arizona. Ever since I was a child I have always been interested in art and creating things with my hands. I honestly never thought I would like stamping, but in the summer of 2014, I went to a Stampin' Up! class one of my friends had, and I fell in love with stamping. Now 3 years later most of my stamps are still from SU!

My favorite form of paper crafting is card making. I have always been a giving person, and I think it means a lot to my friends and family to receive something handmade. For me, crafting is my escape from reality.

Once I start crafting, I don't have a care in the world and I often lose track of time. Crafting makes me very happy and it's something I love to do as much as possible.

To see more or my creations you can find me at Timman23 on Instagram.

Sympathy Cards are Hard

The hardest cards in the world to make, write and receive are sympathy cards. No one receives a sympathy card unless they have endured a great loss. Knowing what to say to someone who has suffered a loss is difficult at best.

Mondo Peony by Julie Ebersole for Essentials by Ellen (Hutson)
colored with Copic Markers. Sentiment from Hero Arts.

Last week I had planned to show you all a few cards I sent to a family of friends who lost their mother/grandmother. She was a nice lady that my son knew as Grandma Betty.

Image is from a retired Stampin' Up! set, water colored with
Stampin' Up! inks.

While I was preparing this series, my brother-in-law lost his mother. She was a very kind woman who wanted to take my whole family home to India with her.

Images and die cuts are Henna Elements from Altenew.
Sentiments are from Hero Arts.

Before I could get too far into the series two aquaintances lost their dogs. I was beginning to think that I should abandon the idea of sharing sympathy cards at all.

I colored this beauty with Copic Markers. I have no idea who made this image,
if you know let me know. The maker of the sentiment is also a mystery,
again if you know let me know.

Dragon Dictate Software test
A lot of Tags

Dragon Dictate software

This is a test of the Dragon Dictate software for Mac. I am writing this post in Microsoft Word, then pasting it into blogger. Over the holidays I watched a lot of Hallmark Channel movies. Late night Dragon dictate seems to own the advertising on the Hallmark Channel. I ordered the software because it was inexpensive compared to their regular price and because it looked cool.

My mother bought me the PC version several months ago after seeing an ad on TV. She said I would be able to get more done and post more frequently to my blog. I also think she bought it so she could write on the computer without actually having to type. She doesn't even know how to turn the computer on yet, but with Dragon Dictate she might be able to send emails or letters to her sister in Texas.

So today I am testing it. I don't mind typing, but I'm a much better editor that I am a typist. If I can speak to you and spew all the thoughts in my head then go back and edit the content, it's so much easier for me.

The software has a learning curve. I need to learn how to speak so it can recognize what I say. And it needs to learn what I'm saying and how I speak. When you speak there is a box in the middle of your screen that says, “Recognize Text,” with the text it just recognized. This is slightly annoying but I'd rather speak then type. I can speak a lot faster than I can type.

The software comes with a headset microphone. I must look like I'm at some kind of call center. Small price to pay for not having to type. There's one earpiece, and the microphone is on the same side as the earpiece. The other side has a bar that goes above your ear. I have a ponytail today and every time I take the headphones off the bar gets caught in my hair. Again small price to pay for not having to type.

Tags a lot

Today's post features tags I made before the holidays. All my holiday tags were put on gifts. But I was in a tag making mood before the gift tags were made and I have several to share.

This tag was inspired by Tim Holtz and Julie Fei-Fan Balzer. The background is very Tim, and the leaves are very Julie.

This tag is also inspired by Julie and Tim. This time the background features circles that remind me of work. The music and lamppost stamp are both from Tim Holtz. Many of these tags also include postage stamps. The postage on this tag is a Christmas stamp. The wreath on the lamppost was created by me in Illustrator and cut out on the Silhouette SD. The red dots on the wreath are Smoosh ink. (Dragon doesn't like brand names sometimes - I had to type Smoosh).

This tag was an experiment with glue and glitter. I am not a big glitter fan. I won a bunch of glitter from Amy at Mod Podge Rocks, and in the package was a note saying that I would hoard this glitter and Mod Podge but I would use it within 13 years. The Mod Podge has been used several times, but the glitter was harder for me to use at all. A friend of mine calls glitter the herpes of the craft world, "because you can never get rid of it," and I believe it. So this experiment was important as I was testing adhesives to see if they would hold the glitter without it flaking off. The chunky glitter is never going to move. The finer glitter comes off if rubbed, but does not come off if you don't work at it. Thank you Glossy Accents.

This tag features embellishments from K and Company. When I purchased the package I did not realize that each embellishment had several layers. They were not going to work for the projects they were purchased for, so I use them on tags. The background uses Distress inks, and a template of wood grain by fill this in later. This stamp of the postmark has been in my collection for years, the postage stamps have also been in my collection for years. It's nice to finally get the old stuff out and use it.

This tag also features a K and Company embellishment, and an old postage stamp, as well as a page from a book. The background was colored with metallic Distress ink. The leaves are from a very old stamp. I used Versamark ink and embossed with green Zing embossing powder. Upon close inspection the words on the page are also embossed. I will have to experiment a bit more to see how what else I can do with that.

This tag was super easy to make. It features a laugh banner stamp from the dollar bin at Michael's. The cherries are from that K and Company embellishments collection, and the stripes are washi tape. The edges have a bit of Distress ink to give it some depth.

The next tag features a green background thanks to a Distress ink dauber. A stamp from Stampin’ Up provides the stems for the flowers and the grass around them. The flowers are fallen fakes picked up from the floor at Michael's. The “private collection” stamp has been in my collection for a very long time, I'd forgotten I even had it. The green tape at the bottom is florist tape. The butterfly is from K and Company.

The background of this tag was colored with blue Mr. Huey ink mister. I put some repositionable tape on the tag first so I would have a space to put the word "voyage". The voyage stamp was stored with the “private collection” stamp so I forgot I had that too. The postage stamps are from all over the world but the colors worked so well together for a monochromatic or duo-chromatic tag. The butterfly is from the K and Company embellishments collection mentioned before.

The last tag features a butterfly from the K and Company collection. The background is from a calendar, I cut just a small portion of the wall behind a floral arrangement for this tag. Sort of like having free paper. "Friends forever" is a stamp from Stampin’ Up. I used a punch from Stampin’ Up for the scalloped border.

Hopefully I will be able to post more frequently now that the holidays are over and the crazy has died down.

A busy life and random cards

You know how life gets really busy for a while then seems to settle into a nice rhythm and you get routines for daily living down pat. Me neither. I seem to always be running even when there is no where to run to.

Each month at work we have a week and a half of crazy busy leading up to our publication date. I create ads for a monthly direct mail magazine. This last week was the week and tomorrow (or today depending on what time you are reading this) starts the really crazy half week. So I have been busy with work.

I am working on updating some furniture and our house looks like the prequel to Hoarders, "Hoarders - How it all begins." The dining room cabinets have been cleaned out completely and their contents are all over my living room. I will be posting on these projects later. If you want a clue as to what some of the changes will be you can look at my Pinterest board For the Home.

I have also been busy with Cub Scouts taking my son to his meeting one day and returning the next with the neighbors kids for their meetings.

Today (or yesterday - again depends on when you are reading this) I started a new volunteer position. I am a catechist at church teaching 6th graders. This is my first year but I am teaching with a woman who has several years experience and I am looking forward to both teaching and learning in this class. The other teacher's goal is for the kids to shock their parents with what they have learned. I took the challenge. We are studying the Old Testament and today I taught the kids a mnemonic device to help them remember the books of the Pentateuch (the first 5 books of the Bible) in order.

God's               Genesis
Everlasting      Exodus
Love                Leviticus

Cool Tool Challenge

Quick Card for the Paper Crafts Magazine Cool Tools Week: The Around the House Challenge. I have wanted to play with washi tape for a while but I can't afford the price so I have converted some Beauty Mark Hair Tape into faux washi tape by stamping on it. I used Martha Stewart's pattern background stamps and gotta say, I like the look. Wish the hair tape came in other colors but pink is perfect for a simple Valentine card.

I have posted about this tape before, here and here.

Tubes of Magic Reindeer Food

I am still preparing for this Saturday's Craft Fair at Paddock Elementary School, 225 Washington St. Palatine, IL next to Kinsch's Floral Shop. The show is open 9:30 am to 1:00 pm stop by and see me if you can.

One of the things I will be selling is tubes of Magic Reindeer Food. I met an elf who gave me the scientific formula for Reindeer Food so I decided to package it in a scientific package - Test tubes. I have a supply from son's  Mad Scientist Birthday Party last year.

label_set_C00392_41853  - altered
I found the verbiage of several websites, none of which I thought to write down so thanks to EVERYONE who has ever packaged Reindeer Food.

The tag was made using a label set I got from the Silhouette Online Store. The words didn't fit properly so I altered the tag by adding a box over the tag and welding the shapes together. I added the hole behind the reindeer to the tag on the silhouette. I created a 1-3/8" circle on the Silhouette to use as a template for placement of the punched circles. I used a 1-1/4" punch on the reindeer and a 1-3/8" punch for the reindeer's mat.

The bit of greenery at the bottom of the tags were hand drawn. My son picked out which reindeer we used for this project. I think he picked well - kind of classy. There is exactly 4" of twine holding the tag on the tube. Well holding it in the tube. The ends of the twine are inside the tube being held in by the cork.

My son helped fill the tubes and some of his tubes looked a little low. When I asked about it he said he was concerned that we wouldn't have enough supply. I showed him there was more food and the tubes could be filled he confessed that he wanted it for OUR house. I love that he still believes.

I used a small bucket to display the test tubes. The bottom of the bucket is filled with shredded paper so the tags and tubes would be visible. So how do you like it?

Would you pick up a bit of magic at a craft fair if the price were right? BTW I wonder what the right price would be?
