WOYWW - a different day and perspective

Sunday my son took over the camera and snapped pictures of anything and everything. This is what kids do and I thank God and all the people involved in developing digital technology that allows me to delete unwanted images. I don't really need a picture of the seat of my chair or a close up of a pen cap.

Sunday I had a particularly creative session of experimenting with inks, paints, stamps and papers. The remnants are in the picture below. So I get to play Eye Spy with all of you too. Because he is shorter and shot the picture from farther away than I usually do you get to see a lot more of the mess storage .
Click to enlarge, makes Eye Spy easier to play,

Can you find:
  1. A proportion wheel (put away, sort of)
  2. A Spirograph set, circa 1972 (put away)
  3. A boom box remote control (put away)
  4. A Fiskar's stamp press (out)
  5. A Stamp-a-ma-jig  (put away)
  6. A Fiskar's cutter (put away)
  7. Tulip Puff Paint (out)
  8. Decorative Duck Brand Tape  (out - hint it is black and white and damask all over)
  9. A roll of paper towels (put away, sort of)
  10. A calculator that I use more than the proportion wheel (put away)

For bonus points (which, when added to $5 will get you a hot drink at Starbucks):  a donkey sticker, 2 penguins on an ice floe, and a heat gun - all put away, plus a cell phone that only allows me to talk to people (not put away).

Studio Calico Christmas Wish List

Today on the Studio Calico blog they asked readers to share their Christmas Wish List. My crafty gift list is long. Really long. I sometimes feel bad that these are the things I really want. Maybe I should want books unrelated to crafting. Or clothes. Or jewelry. Or expensive electronics like a smart phone (ok I do want that). But generally I want to play with art supplies. So here's my Studio Calico list, in no particular order.

Weekday Stamp Set. I wanted the outlined alphabet they had but I put it off and now it's unavailable. Drats.
I really like the Jenny Bowlin Acrylic Paint Dabbers by Ranger. First color on my list is Malted Milk.
I'd love any (and all) of the Claudine Helmuth Studio line of semi-gloss paint. I especially like Classic Teal Paint.
I'm liking Mister Huey's spray ink, especially the colors Lunchtray and Applejack.
I'd like Maya Road's Maya Mists in any color including Licorice Metallic.
I'd love to complete my Distress Ink collection starting with Mustard Seed.
I'd like to do a mini-book for the cousins and would love to get 5 sets of the Home Front journaling cards.
Would like a set of Wood Veneer - Alphabet stickers for a handy dude page.

The rest of the crafty wish list is here on Amazon.

I also wish for a job where I get to play with these things without having to own/store them. If anyone has one of those on offer I'd love to hear about it.

The little things mean so much

I love that my son wants to spend time with me. He hugs me for no reason, or when he knows he is in trouble. I know that his desire to be in the same room with me will disappear in a few years so I cherish the sweet silly things we do together. He is a great sharer when it comes to goofy stuff we do and these stickers are no exception.
Stickers from a birthday party on the back of a Christmas card envelope.

He got a set of stickers at a birthday party on Sunday and we put these robots together over breakfast Monday morning. I would but a set of eyes on the face and he would put on the mouth or I would put on an arm and he would put on the other. The story he came up with for these images was so sweet and I feel bad that I didn't write it down after he left for school. I do remember that the last one on the right had a itchy arm. Odd that metal could itch.

Christmas Tag Finished and Applied

The final tag with name and extra embellishing. Isn't this a beautiful package? Just what every 8 year old boy wants to see. Well actually it is. His name on a gift is really important.

Winter Blossoms

Have you ever bought craft supplies because you had a "plan" for them, then got them home and tried to work the plan only to find out the plan wouldn't work for you? Do you have craft supplies you're storing because someday you will use them on something, anything? Be honest now

Me too. I have oodles of stuff like that. Well today I married up some seemingly unrelated items and was quite pleased with the results.

When the local JoAnn Fabrics closed their doors I nearly bought out the place. That was in the days of cash flow, when I worked 10 minutes from home and JoAnn was between here and there. I had a "plan" for each purchase, of course that was 4 years ago and so many of those projects have been abandoned or forgotten. I bought a lot of brads, snaps and eyelets back then. If you follow my work you know I don't use a lot of these items so I still have a little drawer full of brads, etc.

When shopping in stores with floral aisles departments I will pick up fallen flowers and bring them to the cashier to be "dealt" with. I don't want them to be destroyed my a cart if they can be returned to a stem, generally cashiers will take them and lean toward the waste basket. I always offer to take these fallen treasures home. It's become habit and now I have a box full of flowers.

Last year I bought a string of felt snowflake garland to cut up and use on cards. These cards were never made. And I have a sandwich box full of flakes.

These are not the days of cash flow and this year's gifts aren't much so I wanted to make the tags special and more elaborate than usual. The items listed above don't sound like they would combine well but they actually went together quite well to form the embellishment on some of this year's tags.

Which do you prefer, music or Italian Poetry?

I've been following Tim Holtz's 12 Tags of Christmas, it's now one of my holiday traditions, and I loved the colors and music background on Tag Number 9.

Well I don't have that stamp but I do have some holiday song books and a printer/copier that I can reduce stuff on so I reduced some sheet music for a background. and tried to use Distress ink on it to change the color. Well the colors on the music started to smear so I abandoned the idea and crumpled up the paper then used the ink pad directly on the paper picking up the wrinkles only.

I tried using the same colors with the Italian Poetry stamp from Hero Arts and some distressing. I didn't go as far as Tim did with the distressing (if you could see my desk you'd know why) and it's ok but not a wow.

I used a wide Christmas plaid ribbon on the right and added the brad, blossom, flake embellishment. I am thinking about centering a die cut between the embellishment and the bottom of the tag so I can add the gift recipient's name to the tag. I've been searching for my small alpha stickers off and on all day, this is the drawback of leaving the studioffice with supplies, sometimes they don't return to the right spot.

My son prefers the music tag to the Italian Poetry tag. Which do you prefer?

Spellbinders Nestabilities Label 4 die.
Stampin' Up! Cardinal Christmas stamp set
My son also prefers a yellow center to a reddish one so here is one of his gifts. The letters here are from a Chartpak Velvet Touch Lettering set of rub-on I used in college - before computers were so ubiquitous. They are 25 years old and still work well if not often. I have so many of them and have decided to use them this year.  I have a new philosophy when it comes to a lot of stuff in my massive stash: use it or lose it. If it's not serving me I'm serving it by storing it and that needs to end. Too much clutter makes the mojo go blind.

A while back I received an envelope of papers from Jamaica Edgell, of the Effer Dares, as a share for a challenge the Dares were running. It was quite inspiring. I got a page from a daily planner, a "Hello my name is…" sticker, and several colorful scrapbook papers. I created something as soon as I got it. It was that inspiring.

Well I am considering doing the same thing, offering inspiration packs to my followers and friends. My stash includes a lot of postage stamps, antique books, maps, the aforementioned flowers, and scrapbook papers. If you would be interested in receiving an inspiration pack become a follower and let me know. I will start putting them together.

#7271 loves Ikea

Yesterday I was busy running around doing errands and helping a friend whose car was in the shop. I had a list but not a lot of time. One item on that list was to find a new top for the drawers in my studioffice closet. I wanted a flat surface for wrapping gifts and packing items for shipping.
I removed the board on the back.
My son took the picture and the color
was so bad so I converted it to B/W.
I went to Ikea, got the stuff I needed and headed to the As Is section for the board. I pulled out my measurements and one of those super fancy paper measuring tapes they offer and there is was, sitting on the floor in front of the rest of the boards. A real wood board just the right size with no holes drilled through it, rounded corners plus an additional piece of wood hinged on the back so it be placed against the wall and not move around for only $3. It was like a gift from God. All I had to do was remove the 1"x2" board that was on the back. It was a great handle but wouldn't lay flat on the drawers.
Speaking of gifts, when I got home there was a package waiting for me. I was hoping it would be a silhouette but no. It was something totally unexpected. I became a Fiskateer in June and they sent me a gift. Monogrammed scissors. How cool is that. The handle is not the familiar Fiskar's orange but orange and lime. So happy.
