Thoughts on Thursday Challenge

I have participated in a few challenges lately and really enjoy having my mojo tested or sparked but outside sources. I've wanted to host a challenge for a long time but I always wanted to do one based on a quotation. I have a friend who is a great quote collector and we have challenged each other in the past with quotes for cards.

I don't care what you make - a card, scrapbook page, gift tag, luggage tag, 3D object, or video I just want to see what you can make based on the quote:

"In America there are two classes of travel
— first class and with children." — Robert Benchley

Here is my take on it:

Paper: Stampin' Up! Soft Sky, Patterned Paper, Summer Sun
Stamps: The van from Inkadinkado Road Trip, the plane is from Target Dollar Spot, the exhaust flourish is from Autumn Leaves Word Flourishes by Rhonna Farrer, the van flowers are from Papertrey Ink's Up, Up and Away set.
The sun was made by punching out 2 stars and a circle and layering.

What's on Your Workdesk? Wednesday - my take

I have thought about posting for What's On Your Workdesk? Wednesday but never got my act together or I had cleaned up on Tuesday or the work desk was so bad that I couldn't imagine posting something that bad. Well today is the day. I've made three cards recently, two for birthdays and one get well. The get well is for fellow blogger Lynn Stevens who writes Trash to Treasure Art.

Now I need to get to the pack and ship to send out stuff bought from my Etsy shop. To see what's available see the link above.

Blended Pencil Daisies

Today's card is my take on the Blended Pencils tutorial Lydia Fiedler did on Splitcoast Stampers a few weeks ago. I don't know what possessed me to make the card but I really like the way it turned out. The flowers from the Stampin' Up Upsy Daisy set were inked with Sahara Sand and colored with Prismacolor pencils. Then the So Saffron and Old Olive were blended onto the edges to frame the piece. There was a big empty spot that needed something so I got out the sentiment from Friends 24-7 and inked it up with the Tangerine Tango Marker (I love that Stampin' Up makes their InColors into markers now. Makes life much easier/cheaper). I think the sentiment fits perfectly.

When I make cards I rarely work from a sketch - mine or anyone else's. Often it's a very organic process, I look at the scraps I have, see what set strikes my fancy and go . Where I end up is often a mystery when I begin.

So what's your process?
Do you follow a map or let the muse guide you?
Are you a sketch person or a scraps person?

Paper: Stampin' Up! Tangerine Tango & So Saffron
Ink: Sahara Sand, Tangerine Tango Marker, So Saffron and Old Olive
Stamps: Upsy Daisy and Friends 24-7
Other: Prismacolor pencils, blending sponges

What I learned from other stampers - you turkey

I guess I could claim that everything I've learned about stamping I learned from other stampers along the way. But that's not really what Nichole Heady of Papertrey Ink is talking about so I will just talk about 2 techniques that I learned from other stampers.

This card was made with scraps on the table and the limited edition Four of A Kind set that I got at CHA. I love that you can use flower stamps for other things like the sun or wheels or the feathers of a turkey like I did here. The sentiment is also Papertrey Ink from Friendship Jar set.

The first technique is 2 color stamping where you ink the stamp in one color and then ink the edges of the image with a darker color. The next step wasn't part of the original lesson but I always lightly mist with water before stamping for a more fluid (pardon the pun) coloring.

Beate Johns showed me a better way of using a sponge blending tool starting off the card and working your way onto the card for a softer look and no square bits on your projects. This is hard to do with a piece of paper under your card so I use an evil page protector from an even more evil old "magnetic" photo album - the kind that kill photos. I took one apart - ok it FELL apart - and I found that the protector was perfect for this purpose.

I made this thinking of Thanksgiving. Non card makers and men don't think that far ahead. My dad thought it was, "You're invited you turkey."

Today is the day!

Effer Dares 169, Scrap What You Wear, was posted today and I was one of the guest designers. This guest shot was not because of my great abilities but because of my great speed. I was one of the first 15 to have my page into Jamaica. I am incredibly stoked to be featured there with other talented ladies who show you what they wear as well.

In looking at the pages I have submitted for effer dares am struck by a few things.
1) My dare pages do not feature photos. At least not my own photos. The pages are more like art journal pages than scrapbook pages.
2) I have a habit of filling up the pages. This is not my usual style when designing ads for customers. I like white space, customers did not. Perhaps now that I have been away from ad production for a while the idea of using all the space is starting to win. Not necessarily good.
3) I appear to like grey as a base color.
4) Patterned paper is used very judiciously. I don't know that that is a good thing. Or a bad thing. It's just a thing right now.

Head on over to the Effer Dares page and see my page. I will post it here when they have posted the next dare.

The Birth Control for Asthma

This is what the nurse at the allergist called Asmanex, and darned if she isn't right. I haven't been feeling good for the last several days and they gave me a prescription for the Asmanex inhaler and BAM. In one day I already feel better, not perfect but much better.

Plus the drug company, Schering-Plough, gives you the first one FREE. And if you are having trouble affording it you can contact them for help. I didn't look into that because the first one's FREE and I hope to have a job within the month. If not, well I may be calling that handy number on their website.

If I don't use the inhaler the asthma flares up and the allergies go all haywire.
If you don't use birth control and are sexually active you might get one of these in the mail.

This card wasn't made for a challenge other than, "Kate, you should really use some of these stamps and pattern paper scraps you have lying around here." It's been a long time since I opened the baby box and it's time I did because baby cards are fun. This one is really simple but was still fun to make.

So what do you have lying around that you haven't touched in a while that you could make into a card? I'd love to see what you come up with so link your creations back here.

......................................
The card stock is Stampin' Up Certainly Celery. The patterned paper is ancient Die Cuts with a View (link is similar but not the same.)
The sweater, booties and bottle are all Rubber Stampede. The pin and duck are from an old foam mounted All Night Media set. The sentiment in the circle is by a Hampton Art stamp by Kolette Hall, I got from the Micheal's dollar bin. The
"Congratulations" sentiment is from the Stampin' Up! Sale-A-Bration set Congrats (2009)

Now off to bed.

One more challenge, one more card

This card is for the Tuesday Trigger challenge at Moxie Fab World. If you want to play along the challenge is still open until September, 19.

I tried to stay close to the idea of the original image of lipsticks in various colors. This card kind of has a lipstick feel and what a great way to use up scraps of reds. I just punched scraps with the scalloped edge punch (the link goes is for the new design) I got from Stampin' Up! and the sentiment is from the Friendship Jar Fillers set by Papertrey Ink.

Thank you to my friend Goo for a wonderful day today and helping me keep a bit of perspective on things.

Effer Dares - 168

Now on to the Effer Dares challenge. Dare 168 was supplied by Stephanie Wheeler, aka livingroomfloor. She was given the power to choose this week's dare and this is what she came up with:

Scrap a soundtrack to a memory.

I had to read that several times and look at the samples repeatedly before I really knew what I wanted to do. My first thought for a soundtrack was the Bill Murray movie Meatballs. I used to love the song "Are You Ready For The Summer?" But a memory of dancing around my room alone didn't really seem scrap worthy. Of course the song is blog worthy so here you go, relive your youth or create a new memory.

After a bit more thought I decided to scrap a memory I actually shared with someone, I don't remember her full name but skating was a regular activity I shared with a girl name Virginia or as everyone I knew called her, Punky (this was well before the days of Punky Brewster).

I included the lyrics because when this page is unearthed when I am old a grayer I will want to know that the words were. The photo, by McBeth, was found on Flickr.

Here you go:

Well I've got to do all I've got to do so I need to get to doing it.

Katie

Another response to another challenge

This card is in response to the Pals Paper Arts Celebrity Color Challenge (PPA59). The fabulous Beate Johns chose 3 colors and the Pals said, "GO!" Beate's choices were:

So I looked for patterned paper that featured these colors in an attempt to use all that paper that's been sitting unused and feeling unappreciated for a long time. Here's my card.

The particulars:
All Papers are from Stampin' Up!.

The punches are not. The tag punch is from Emagination crafts (a company that closed it's doors 4 years ago) and the leaves are Martha Stewart.
All the stamps are from Stampin' Up!. The flower is from the retired Embrace Life set and the sentiment and little leaf are from the Great Friend set.
The aging on the tag was done with Tim Holtz Distress Ink in Antique Linen. All other inks are from Stampin' Up!
The bling in the center of the flower is from Studio 18 available at Michael's. The dimensional black dots on the flowers were made with Scribblers 3D paint from Duncan.

3 Remarkable Things

Scrolling through the blogs today I stopped to read Ali Edwards' Three Things post and followed the links to Chris Guillebeau's post, "THE DECISION TO BE REMARKABLE" on his Art of Non-Conformity blog and was struck by the advice to "Beware of Excellence". In his words:

Beware of Excellence

But watch out: being remarkable is addicting. It’s like regular exercise or healthy eating. When you first start a new exercise routine or diet, the adjustment is hard for a while. But after about 3-6 months of following it consistently, you build up a natural addiction to it.

Once you get used to regular exercise, you’ll feel bad when you’re not doing it. The same is true with being remarkable: do it once, and it’s scary. Do it a few times, and you love it. Stop doing it, and you’ll get depressed.

I thought about the old job where if you performed miracles, say getting a project done well in record time to meet a deadline, it was then expected of you all the time. And you know what, I liked it that way. I liked being a 'go to' person for good designs done quickly. I delivered beyond my departments expectations enough that it became the sales departments expectation. If that makes any sense.

Reading his post I began to understand what was going on with me this past weekend. I haven't been REMARKABLE lately.

Today I got a nice little packet in the mail from Jamaica at Effer Dares. I WON AGAIN! This win was based on speed instead of a random draw. I was one of the first 15 to post my design for their last dare. Anyway Jamaica sent a bunch of different papers and stickers and an invitation to play. I scurried up to the studioffice and resumed being REMARKABLE.

I'd love to share it with you but you will have to wait until they have posted Dare 169 to their site.

I love how this card turned out. I inked the solid/patterned balloons in the Papertrey Ink Up, Up and Away set with 2 colors then spritzed it with water before stamping to get a watercolor like look. I stamped the outline in black and missed the mark, there is a fine white line that should be filled with black. But you know what. I love it. It looks like I went in with a fine white pen and added highlights on the pink balloon. The balloons and clouds are cut with Papertrey Ink dies. Of course. All papers are Stampin' Up!

This card has an awful mess right in the middle. I love making cards because that awful mess is covered by a pretty little focal point that hadn't occurred to me when I started. Loving the combination of Cameo Coral and Kiwi Kiss, unfortunately they are both retired. All papers and ink are Stampin' Up! The flowers are from "Four of a Kind" the free set Papertrey Ink gave to big spenders at CHA.

Lastly this page is remarkable only because it is finally done, after 2 years. It's a lot better than I had anticipated given that I was just slapping it together so I would quit moving the brochures and postcard from the Art Institute around the studioffice. Now I can finally put it all away. It's nice to get things put away. The paper is Basic Grey Motifica™ Chalk. I don't know if you can even buy it in paper form anymore, I got it for 10¢ in a clearance bin ages ago I loved this line. I did find some items from the Motifica line in digital form on the Basic Grey site.

All this being REMARKABLE business is tiring. Either that or it's past my bedtime.

Until next time,
Happy Crafting,

Katie

More than a dozen -ATIONS

devastation | isolation | desolation | mortification | relaxation | stagnation | inspiration | jubilation | humiliation | mastication | rumination | consolation | determination | motivation | information | invocation | dedication

When I was told that my services were no longer necessary I was devastated. I was 2 months shy of 20 years of service. I have been living with this devastation for a couple of months now and it’s not getting any easier. Unemployment sucks!!! The days all look the same when the deadlines and meetings and commute are gone. Yes I chose the things most people dislike about their jobs because I even miss that part of working.

Unemployment is a lonely place. Many days I don’t see anyone but my son. Employers now require that you apply for jobs online so you don’t even get to talk to someone when you hand over a resume or fill out an application. All communications with your contacts, your network, are via email or Facebook or phone. It’s not the same as face to face. I miss talking to people. I miss faces. The ISOLATION can be very wearing.

I know it is work to find work, but it is becoming work to avoid feelings of utter DESOLATION. Friday I had feelings of dread and I couldn’t figure out what the problem was. Then it hit me; I will be jobless on Labor Day for the first time since I started working. A three-day weekend doesn’t mean anything to someone who has no place to go when it’s over. I talked to my Dad this weekend and he understood saying, “Retirement robbed me of all my holidays.”

I haven’t done a very good job of shaking the sadness this weekend. Saturday I went with a friend to the library to get her son his first library card and borrow a movie for Sunday, turns out they live a couple of blocks out of the library’s service area and have to go to the next town over for a card. After that bit of disappointment we went out for lunch and she paid for my son and me. I am grateful but not paying was fuel for the gloom.

Sunday we went to Mass where they talked about the dignity of work. Let the water works begin. Several people spoke about finding God in their work. One man spoke about the Saturday morning Job Support Group at the parish. The face is a bit moist now. A woman who works in HR talked about having to break the news to people that their services were no longer needed and how she works on the other side of transition at a local Career Center. Hearing about the dire circumstances other people were in when they lost their jobs really got the tears flowing. And when she told people to maybe take an unemployed person’s kids out for lunch I lost it.

After the homily we stand for prayers. When it is time for communion we sit down and wait our turn to go up and receive the body and blood of Christ. I was so lost in thought about my coming week that I remained standing longer than I should have. We were in the third row of a large church and some people behind me were laughing. MORTIFICATION.

After Mass I talked to a few friends as my son played with their kids. Eventually he was running in the sanctuary behind the altar. DOUBLE MORTIFICATION. He knows better and this will not be tolerated so his Wii privileges were revoked for a week.

The murkiness of the weather and my foul mood made it hard to concentrate on anything so I decided it was time to give up and watch the movie we had borrowed from the library. It was Doctor Doolittle, the original with Rex Harrison. I thoroughly enjoyed reminiscing about my cousins Pushmi-Pullyu doll. I used to be so jealous. I remember it could talk and it was very well loved.

If you’re interested you can get one of your own from Chatty Cathy Dolls. They sold a mint condition Pushmi-Pullyu, in the original unopened box, for $299.99. They have others items from the movie but I doubt they would be in the original unopened box.

After the movie we ate dinner then I doddered upstairs to the studioffice. I looked at a few blogs for ideas thinking maybe I could craft myself a little happy. While the boy created Lego masterpieces I stumbled through making some cards. I had tried to craft a bit the night before but the unidentified gloom was too strong and the mojo was just not working. Saturday = STAGNATION.

After the boy went to bed Sunday I began to hit my stride. I was beginning to like what I was making. I cased a card by Savitri Wilder whose work I love. Great INSPIRATION. To the left is my version of the card she posted Saturday. Then I started making cards of my own design and really got into it. I’ll post those later.

It was super late when I finally decided I should go to bed. I thought I’d check my email before I turned the computer off for the night. JUBILATION! I won! Out of 273 comments on last Sunday’s Mod Podge Rocks post “Art Glitter Halloween birdhouses and a giveaway.” They picked my name. I’ve never won anything before, well I won a cake in a cakewalk in second grade but that’s a different story.

I woke up Labor Day morning a feeling a little bit better. After all I had won. I was also excited to go to Chicago for a friend’s barbeque. I checked the time it was to begin. Made a cute little gift, perfect for near the guest book that he always has at parties. Then hightailed it into the city. When I got to his house the first thing I noticed was the absence of noise. The party was to begin at 3 and we were there at 3:05. There should be some sound. We rang the bell. He came to the door and informed us that the party was yesterday. What HUMILIATION.

We walked a couple blocks to another friend’s place. We were told she and another friend would be at the beach, well the yard of my old building. Yes I used to live on the shore of Lake Michigan. We got there in time to help her carry items out to the yard for a BBQ with other tenants of the building I used to call home.

I felt very uneasy about being there. I’ve never crashed a party before and I didn’t know most of these people, things change in 5 years. Once another friend, who doesn’t live there, arrived and I was handed a glass of Sangria I felt much better about the situation. We kept to ourselves, my other friend and I but we enjoyed the food they had all brought to share. I love gatherings of mainly adults because the food is so much better than I’m used to. I had tabouli and chicken kebobs. It was glorious MASTICATION.

Tabbouleh
Tabbouleh by jakub_hla, on Flickr

After we ate we saw a figure on the beach that reminded us both of a friend whose life we celebrated and whose death we mourned about a year ago in that same yard. RUMINATIONS about life and death, the past and the uncertainty of my future were like an invitation to the gloom.

Just as we were preparing to leave I was reintroduced to the woman who bought my old condo. She invited us in to see all the “improvements” she had made over the past 5 years. I barely recognized the place and some of the sadness I always feel when returning to the old neighborhood left. I will never long to be in that place again because it will never be the same again.

I drove home from the city and saw the boy off to bed then returned to the computer to check emails and look at a couple of blogs. Today’s post from Melody Ross on the Brave Girls Club Blog made me cry. She writes in a way that makes you feel she is writing directly to you, and today I needed to hear everything she said so if you have time go check it out. So worth reading. Her words were a great CONSOLATION.

Tomorrow I will live on purpose, facing forward, armed with INFORMATION gathered this weekend. I will use whatever MOTIVATION I can find to shake the gloom and get stuff done, perhaps an INVOCATION.

If you are still with me here, what DEDICATION. Thank you.

Happy crafting

When Life Gives you Lemons

This is the first card I've posted with the friendship jar stamps I got at CHA. I love that the lemons fit so well in the large scallop die from Papertrey Ink. None of the samples from the design team put lemons in the scallop but I can't imagine this stamp wasn't designed for use there. It fits so perfectly.

The sentiment was stamped with distressed letters from a Hampton Arts set I got from the $1 bin at Michael's years ago. Distress seemed the best way to go for this sentiment.

The papers are from Stampin' Up! except for the pattern paper which I believe is DCWV. The stamps are of course Papertrey Ink as are the dies.

BTW if you go to Nichole Heady's blog you will see pictures of me in the line at the Papertrey booth at CHA. The 6th photo from the bottom is especially lovely - I am the woman in the purple blouse with the goofy a** grin on my face.

Well back to whatever it was you were doing. Thanks for taking the time.

Chocolate Covered Hearts with love

On top of the challenges I've participated in this week, and yes I'm going to be doing more of that in the future because it's a nice way to spend a Friday evening, I have my own challenges like "use up the scraps of paper", "use colors I haven't in a while" and "make a card in only 6" space of clean table top"

Well on to the next challenge, finding the rest of my desk.

Scrapbooking from the Inside Out

I recently found the blog Scrapbooking From the Inside Out while looking for quotes for a friend and I love it for so many reasons.
This site is an inspirational source, kit club, and online community for scrapbookers who want to explore their inner lives and deepest thoughts and dreams.
While not a substitute for real therapy SFIO is a place to get your brain working on things you may not have thought about before or in a long time. I wandered through the inspiration section for the word Discovery and felt compelled to scrap when I got to the section on Baggage.

The quote, "Your dreams can't take flight if you're weighed down with too much baggage" is mine but I like it just the same. The larger clouds have journalling on them that identifies baggage that may be keeping me from moving forward in certain areas of my life. I made this page for me and didn't worry about anyone else seeing it. So here I am showing it to you, well not all of it. I have blurred out those journalling blocks because honestly my baggage is no one else's bi'ness.

It is rather nice to make a page just for yourself.

I know that Scrapbooking From the Inside Out isn't going to be helpful to those only interested in documenting the stuff that happens to their kid. Not going to be of use to those who only want to share the news. But if you are at all interested in sharing who you really are with your family (perhaps you could put it away and not let it be opened until after your death) this is a great site.

If you don't want to scrap your feelings it's still a great site for quotes and music - they have a soundtrack for each word they feature and I scrapped this page while listening to some really nice tunes. So go for the quotes, go for the music, go for the kits (which I didn't use because I don't have room for anything else in the studioffice right now) just go.

Now for the details on this page.

The base is Stampin' Up! textured tempting turquoise, the clouds are whisper white cardstock cut with the Papertrey Ink cloud die, the patterned paper is K & Company Actopus to Zelephant.
The stickers spelling out FLIGHT are from Cosmo Cricket.
The luggage stamp is an old one from the Challis & Roos line by Inkadinkado. The plane is a white foam Thicker that I've had for ages. I inked it with Versamark then embossed with Ranger embossing powder in red.

Grandpa Munster at 1

While cleaning the studioffice Friday I came across this sheet of pictures of my son taken on his first birthday. Well the room was relatively clean so I was able to, felt compelled to, scrap this photo because I didn't have a "place" for it. Now the room is not as clean as before but I have this pretty page for his book.

The papers are all Stampin' Up! The journaling is on the patterned paper, which wasn't the original idea but my printer refused to print on turquoise paper. Flat out refused. I ran it through several times and nothing. Printed on white after the turquoise was spit out but would not print on the colored paper. I spent way too much time trying to print. The headline is set in Nutmeg glossy stickers from Thickers.

My dad came for a visit from Michigan this weekend which explains no posts for a few days. When I showed my dad the page he didn't notice the papers or embellishments his eye went right to the photos. "Aw isn't he cute. He looks like Grandpa Munster in this picture. Oh look," he says pointing to the headline, "it says Grandpa Munster right there." Laughter fills the room.

The title is "Grandpa Munster at 1" because my dad ALWAYS says he looks like Grandpa Munster, it's the way he's holding his hand. I don't see it really but my dad and I laugh about it each time we see this photo so I went with it.

Tomorrow another page and maybe a few images in the Flickr pool.

Katie
